Why I’m Phree

Pastor Francis Chan explains it best…if you took a piece of string and stretched it from New York to Los Angeles, then tied a piece of red yarn somewhere in the middle of that string, that piece of red yarn represents our life here on earth. The rest, eternity.  With that perspective, the cares of this world (the fancy car, the big house, the power of position, the big salary, the stock portfolio, etc. etc.) mean ZERO in the grand scheme of things.

So what’s with all this “I am Phree” stuff you ask?  I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and because of my belief in Him, I am at peace with God the Father.  When God looks at me, he doesn’t see me and my lifetime of poor behavior, poor speech and poor judgement.  Rather when he DOES look at me, he sees Jesus Christ…sinless and without blemish.  All of this through simple faith in Jesus Christ?  Absolutely.  For God’s word says:

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.Romans 10:9

And because of this majestic reality my eternity is secured, and no matter what happens to me, I will live forever in heaven with Him.

For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16

But that is not all.  Not only is my eternity secure, but I also have power and victory right here in my everyday life.  The dark clutches of excessive drinking, smoking weed, pornography and a thousand other sins of this flesh, are gone.  They no longer are a temptation to me and I have been given victory over them…something I never thought possible while in the throws of abuse.

Now I see the world through a different lens…a lens of grace (receiving something that I did not earn)…a lens of mercy (not receiving something I did earn)…a lens of love (the greatest of all the commandments)…a lens of faith (believing in the word of God and acting upon it, no matter how I feel, knowing that God promises a good result)…a lens of compassion…and a lens of hope (a confident expectation based on trust in God).

Anyone with a television or computer can see that our world is on fire, spinning hopelessly out of control.  But in the midst of all of it, I have a deep peace that no  matter what happens, God is in control and in the end, I win.  THAT is why I am phree.  Phreedom from fear.  Phreedom from hopelessness.  Phreedom from the power of sin.  Phreedom from materialism.  Phreedom from the pursuit of money.  Phreedom that leads to deep, satisfying joy. Phreedom to live and enjoy this life as it was intended…not participating in all these fruitless, chasing-the-wind pursuits. My mind is phree to prefer the comfort of time with family and friends over the chasing the almighty $$, which consumes all of your time and attention.  Keep it.  Nothing wrong with having money, but if it has you, you’re in trouble.

So take a look at these pictures and marvel at the Creator…the oceans, the mountains, the sky, our children, our spouses, our friends…they all point to Him!  And the beauty of it all is that every single one of them is phree of charge.
